BARPETA: The police of Barpeta on Wednesday successfully arrested the main accused behind advocate Rinima Begum's murder which took place on March 21.
The accused were arrested from different parts of Barpeta district and one from Guwahati. The Superintendent of Police of Barpeta, Amitabh Sinha told media persons on Thursday that the accused who were arrested U/S 341/302/32 UPC in case no 338/2022 are- Mahibul Haque, son of Abdus Samad Ahmed, Azad Nagar, Barpeta; Rabial Ali, son of Sahed Ali, Palhazi, Barpeta; Mastab Ali, son of Afasuddin, Majorgaon; Rockybul Islam, son of Sukur Ali, Major gaon; and Abbas Ali, son of Rupchand Ali, Kahibari.
Dr Mokdem Ali had been arrested earlier. One Rafiqul Islam of Pathsala is absconding. A land deal was done between victim Rinima Begum and Dr Mokdom Ali. Rinima took Rs 1.13 crore from Dr Mokdom Ali for a land of 5 bighas. Rinima did another deal for that same plot of land. There was a dispute between Rinima and Dr Mokdom over this. A case has been going on in Barpeta court regarding this land since 2019.
The murder was planned in the last eight months. The brother-in-law of Dr Mokdom Ali, Mahibul Haque took the help of one Rafiqul Islam of Pathsala and an amount of Rs 13 lakh was fixed to execute the murder. An advance amount of Rs 5 lakh was given to Rafiqul, who engaged three persons, namely Rabial, Mastab and Rockybul. The three of them received Rs 1 lakh each. The link between all of them was a plumber named Abbas Ali who set up all the connections. He was also arrested from Sijubari, Hatigaon in Guwahati on Tuesday. One of the accused, Mahibul Haque was undergoing treatment at the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital (FAAMCH), Barpeta.
Based on the confession of the accused, the dagger which was used to kill Rinima was also recovered with the help of SDRF team from the Bhelengi River. Two bikes were also recovered from the house of Mahibul. Rabial used Mahibul Haque's bike that day and Rafiqul, who is absconding, was on the other bike. Rabial stabbed Rinima Begum with the dagger.
Regarding the arrest of another person, Abdur Rahman alias Jumma, SP Amitabh Sinha stated that he was arrested on the basis of eye witness Rupjan Nesa's statement, who is Rinima Begum's elder sister. No evidence has been found against Jumma so he will be released very soon.
