Bengali Aikya Mancha demands enacting of Protection of Language Act

DHUBRI: The second general meeting of the Sara Assam Bengali Aikya Mancha (All Assam Bengali Unity Forum) was held recently in Dhubri which was attended by representatives from various districts of Assam and office bearers and members of the former Executive Committee.

The meeting was chaired by the president of the forum Ranendra Narayan Bhattacharya and the objectives of the meeting were explained by Babul Sutradhar.

The president in his speech reviewed the present contentious issue of language in the State and demanded the State Government to enact the “Mother Language Protection Act” in Assam for the purpose of finding a lasting solution to the problems.

Bhattacharjee called upon every language speaking community in the State and their organizations to join the movement in favour of this demand with the government adding that the forum does not want any division of Assam.

“It is important to understand that the demands of the Barak Valley political parties and organizations are not an attempt to create a Bengali State. It is not a movement to separate from Assam and create a State,” Bhattacharjee added.

Assam Bengali Unity Forum urged upon Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to eradicate discrimination in the Barak Valley. Finally, the convener Sanghamita Chakraborty expressed her gratitude to all the participants. Finally, the meeting was concluded by thanking the presidents.

The event was attended by Kokrajhar Merchants Association Secretary Sandeep Dutta, Dr. Ulka Mandal Bari, retired professor of Bangla department of Kokrajhar College and Suman Mukherjee from Bangagaon. Besides this, the issue of Bongaigaon district wherein undemocratic and unconstitutional activities by some former and present members figured in the meeting.

The meeting also discussed on fixing membership fees, printing of receipt books of fund raising, updating of registration and bank accounts. The general meetings would be held only in Guwahati.
