'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' launched in Lakhimpur district

With special focus on the National Girl Child Day to be celebrated on January 24

LAKHIMPUR: With special focus on the National Girl Child Day to be celebrated on January 24, the Department of Women and Child Development, Lakhimpur under Lakhimpur district administration, along with joint collaboration of District Hub for Empowerment of Women, Lakhimpur, inaugurated the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' (BBBP) scheme on Thursday. Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur, Sumit Sattawan launched the scheme in a ceremonial programme organized in the conference hall of his office.

While addressing a press conference, convened on this occasion, the Deputy Commissioner said, "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme was launched on January 22, 2015 to address the issue of decline in Child Sex Ratio (CSR) in the country along with related issues of empowerment of girls and women, over a life cycle continuum. The scheme aims to achieve the improvement in the Sex Ratio at Birth by 2 points every year, improvement in the percentage of institutional deliveries, 1 per cent increase in 1st Trimester Anti-Natal Care (ANC) Registration per year, 1 per cent increase in enrolment at secondary education level and skilling of girls, women per year, checking of dropout rate among girls at secondary and higher secondary levels, raising of awareness about safe Menstrual Hygiene Management."

He further said, "During the week until January 24, various activities and programmes are being planned to be undertaken by the Department of Women and Child Development. During this tenure a signature campaign will be carried out district level according to the guideline received from Ministry of Women and Child Development. On January 20 and January 24, the department is going to organize a plantation drive, special Gram Sabha, Mahila Sabha, different kind of activities with the religious leaders, community leaders, head teachers, SMC members, teachers, AWWS, ASHA Workers, Jivika Sakhis, SHGS, community people and NGO/CSOS etc. at Lakhimpur Development Block and Dejoo Tea Estate respectively with a special emphasis of various issues related to child marriage, CSR, Health and Nutrition, Legal Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, Medical Termination and Child Protection etc. with the motto to promote the BBBP scheme amongst the targeted groups of the society and to accomplish the objective of the scheme."

The Deputy Commissioner further added that apart from that, various associated events such as felicitation of local girl champions in the field of sport, education, social welfare, community mobilization, drawing competitions, plantations drives would be held on the aforementioned days to create awareness as well as encourage and enhance the skills and creativity of the targeted groups.

During the ceremonial programme of launching the scheme, a pledge-taking event was carried out by the office of the DSWO. DCPU, ICDS projects and NGOs, CSOs and the signature campaign was inaugurated.
