TEZPUR: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured an overwhelming victory in four civic bodies, namely Tezpur, Dhekiajuli, Rangapara and Jamuguri in the civic bodies elections of Sonitpur district. The Congress party has been completely decimated in the elections.
The BJP has won 41 municipal wards in Sonitpur out of 49 for which elections were held on March 6. BJP's ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won two municipal wards while the Congress party managed to win only two municipal wards and Independent candidates won four seats.
On the other hand, the newly-formed political party Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) failed to secure a single seat in the civic bodies elections of Sonitpur district.
The winning candidates in the Tezpur Municipality Board are Sher Alam (Independent, Ward No. 1), Joysankar Hazarika (BJP, Ward No. 2), Amarendra Sarma (Independent, Ward No. 3), Ishan Borah (BJP, Ward No. 4), Dibyajyoti Das (AGP, Ward No. 5), Suman Das (Congress, Ward No. 6), Ramen Tamuli (BJP, Ward No. 7), Priyalata Devi Karmakar (BJP, Ward No. 8), Joshi Nath Saha (BJP, Ward No. 9), Paras Nath Rai (AGP, Ward No. 10), Rumi Bhagawati (BJP, Ward No. 11), Sangeeta Ghosh Bose (BJP, Ward No. 12), Debasree Bhowmik (BJP, Ward No. 13), Sanjay Ghosh (BJP, Ward No. 14), Pragyanoo Bhattacharya (BJP, Ward No. 15), Santana Biswas (BJP, Ward No. 16), Madhusmita Hazarika Deka uncontested BJP candidate of Ward No. 17, Dipa Moni Saikia (BJP, Ward No. 18) and Rinku Moni Lahkar, (BJP, Ward No. 19). In Rangapara municipality board, the BJP won 9 wards while Congress got one. The BJP won 8 of the 10 wards of Dhekiajuli Municipality and Independent candidates won two wards. In Jamuguri Municipality, the BJP won 10 wards out of the 10 wards.
