DHUBRI: The illiterate women of Birsing Part I village are being educated under a unique project initiated by Bhola Nath College here. The project was launched recently and it is implemented under the college’s Extension Service Cell for imparting adult education among the illiterate women of Birsing Part I. The project is an internal initiative of the college not funded by any external funding agency. Initially, a baseline survey was done by the students of the college under the guidance of Assistant Professor Abdul Baten of the Department of Mathematics.
Among the 100 families of the village, 149 illiterate women were identified and the first inaugural class held in the house of Moqtab in Hazipara was formally inaugurated by the Principal of Bhola Nath College, Dr. Dhruba Chakrabortty.
A committee was also formed for the purpose of involving local people. After the survey, illiterate women were identified and brought to classroom for literacy. When asked about the functioning of the project, convener of the Extension Service Cell, Prof Abdul Baten informed that one local lady was acting as a teacher while students of the college, as well as teachers, were teaching the women.
Talking to The Sentinel, Principal of Bhola Nath College, Dr. Dhruba Chakrabortty informed that they had provided books, exercise copies, writing sheets, blackboard, chalk, pencil, duster and other necessary materials to run the school. “We are trying to implement this project as this will create an awareness in other villages too where some educated persons and students could also start a similar center for adult education,” Chakrabortty added.
Chakrabortty also informed that Extension Service Cell was thinking of taking up some more innovative projects in the days to come for fulfilling their social commitment.
