LAKHIMPUR: The Congress workers and supporters of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district have expressed happiness in the wake of appointing Bhupen Borah as the president of APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee). The activists of the political party under both districts have unanimously hailed the decision of Congress high command taken about appointing him as the Congress chief in Assam.
It is noteworthy here that the president of AICC (All India Congress Committee), Sonia Gandhi on Saturday appointed former Bihpuria MLA Bhupen Bora as the new president of APCC by resolving the leadership crisis of the party in Assam. The AICC also appointed three working presidents viz. Rana Goswami, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Jakir Hussain Sikdar with immediate effect.
Bhupen Bora was born to Bogiram Bora and Pratima Bora in 1970 at Adarshagaon under Pohumora area of Lakhimpur district. He won the No. 109 Bihpuria Legislative Assembly (LAC) seat under Lakhimpur district twice in 2006 and 2011. He also served as the spokesperson of the State Government during the tenure of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Borah is a former general secretary of the Dibrugarh University Students' Union. He also served as the president of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC). He had served as one of the secretaries of AICC till he was appointed as APCC president.
Bhupen Bora is assuming the charge of the president of the APCC at a time when some of the party leaders are in a ploy to resign from the Congress to join the BJP, the ruling party of the State. At present, the party's strength is in a poor condition after the consecutive defeat in a series of elections in the past years including the Assam Legislative Assembly Election, 2021. Borah has to overcome lots of challenges about bringing back the past glory of the party in the State.
The Lakhimpur District Congress Committee (LDCC) and Dhemaji District Congress Committee (DDCC) have established firm faith and trust in Bhupen Bora in connection with reorganizing and rejuvenating the Congress in Assam.
''Bhupen Bora is a visionary and dynamic leader in our party. He will add a new dimension to Congress in the State", stated LDCC president Pradip Gogoi while congratulating the new APCC president on Sunday.
Notably, LDCC organized a congratulation programme at Rajiv Bhavan in North Lakhimpur town on Sunday. The Congress activists under North Lakhimpur City, Lakhimpur, Telahi, Naoboicha, Boginadi, Ghilamora, Dhakuakhana Block Congress Committees were present in the programme. Attending the event, Congress leader Padma Losan Doley, LDCC spokesman Prasanta Gogoi, administrative secretary Bimal Borah, organizing secretary Dhan Mahammad and the presidents and secretaries under LDCC congratulated Bhupen Bora.
Congress leaders of Dhemaji district, Dr Hema Hari Prasanna Pegu, Sushil Pegu, Babul Sonowal, Sailen Sonowal and the president and secretaries under DDCC also congratulated Bhupen Bora and hailed the decision of the Congress high command to appoint him as APCC president.
