TANGLA: The All Adivasi Students' Association of Assam (AASAA) on Tuesday alleged that the BJP government had betrayed the Adivasi community as despite the party promising the Adivasis to grant ST status within six months of being voted to power, the promises remained only on pen and paper and were never fulfilled.

AASAA president Stephen Lakra, while addressing a press meet at Tangla town in Udalguri district on Tuesday, said , "The Adivasi community have always been used as vote bank by every consecutive government, be it Congress in the past or BJP at present." The students body termed the government 'pro-corporate' and 'pro-management' and said that the BJP party, which promised of parivartaan, only gave lollipop of fake promises before every poll. Lakra alleged that besides the abysmally low daily wages, the education and health sectors were also neglected sectors across the tea gardens. He further alleged that the legislative assembly passing the three bills to create separate autonomous councils for Moran, Motok and Koch-Rajbongshi communities in the State was an attempt to divide the anti-CAA forces.

He also announced that the student body had prepared to carry out massive protests in the form of human chain protest, sit-in and gherao from September 30 to demand hike in daily wages to Rs 351, ST status to Adivasis, land pattas to tea garden labourers, among others.
