DIGBOI/TINSUKIA: Hours after the announcement of the 2021 Assembly poll schedule in Assam by the Election Commission of India, Assam Police on Saturday arrested State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dipanjali Kakoty Moran in connection with Kakopather PS case No 48 /2020 u/s 294, 448, 332, 427 IPC involving the assault of a police official on duty and other charges.

"We arrested the accused from her Dirak-based Powai residence in Kakopather area early this morning," said the OC, Biraj Das.

Dipankali Kakoty had allegedly assaulted Kakopathar police station sub-inspector Apurba Das earlier in November, 2020. Accordingly, the police had registered a case against Kakoty for abusive behaviour, physical assault and obstructing a public servant from carrying out his duty. However, the mystery behind the failure of the police in arresting her for the past four months is yet to be understood.

According to the FIR lodged against Kakoty by the complainant SI Das, the BJP leader had 'flaunted her proximity' to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, threatened to get the officer sacked and 'assaulted' him thereof in the police station while on duty. Kakoty was also an executive member of the State committee of the saffron party which suspended her subsequently for defiling the party image.

Meanwhile, the police produced her before the court on Saturday afternoon. Though bail petition was reportedly moved by her advocate, she was under legal custody till filing of the report.
