GUWAHATI: Bhartiya Janata Party's BJP Biswajit Daimary today took oath as the Member of Parliament.

Earlier, in February, Daimary was elected unopposed to the upper house of parliament. As no other person had filed nomination except Diamary he was declared winner of the by-election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Assam.

It needs to be mentioned here that earlier the seat was lying vacant as Daimary switched to BJP from the Bodoland peoples' Front BPF and resigned from Rajya Sabha in November last year.

Ahead of the elections to the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Council, BJP and its ally BPF engaged in bitter terms over the BTC polls. Later the BJP ditched its ally BPF and fought in alliance with the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL). The United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) has won 12 seats, the BJP nine, while the Congress and the Gana Suraksha Party (GSP), headed by Lok Sabha MP Naba Sarania, got one each.

Following differences within the party the Rajya Sabha member and working president of ruling Bodoland People's Front (BPF)- Daimary quit the party and joined BJP, which now heads the coalition government in the region.

Daimary resigned from BPF just days before the election to the BTC, where the party has been in power for the past 15 years. His Rajya Sabha term was to end in 2026. Along with Daimary, BPF's General Secretary, Emmanuel Mosahary, also joined the BJP.

The BJP later on February named Daimary, who had joined it after quitting his Rajya Sabha seat as a BPF MP, as its candidate for the by-election to the Upper House from Assam. Daimary has been thrice elected to the House since 2008 and had quit soon after his re-election in 2020.

Along with Daimary, Dineshchandra Jemalbhai and Rambhai Mokariya from Gujarat today took oath as Rajya Sabha MPs. Chairman M.Venkaiah Naidu administered the oath to the new members.
