Delhi: A blind couple was framed on charges of murder for allegedly beating up an 8-year-old blind girl as they believed that she was not studying.

The blind couple, named Mohd. Khalid and Reena were charged by Additional Sessions Judge Pitamber Dutta in an order that was passed last week. The order stated that "there is sufficient prima facie evidence" that proves that the accused had "committed murder" of the 8-year-old girl "by inflicting 15 injuries on her body."

This development was made after a neighbour of the blind couple registered a complaint on May 7, 2020, alleging that the girl would often be beaten up by the couple.

The blind couple, who had been living together for the past 6 years, had brought the minor girl home from a relative's place claiming that they would take care of her.

The neighbour who lodged the complaint claimed that the couple would often beat up the child for not studying. He also added that he heard the screams of the girl at 11:30 pm on May 6. Further, the neighbour claimed that he had heard the girl crying on the phone, as she apologized and promised to study harder.

When the girl lost consciousness she was taken to the hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

As per the allegations made by the prosecution, Khalid and Reena had "intentionally and mercilessly killed minor". The little girl was tied with a rope and hit several times with a baton merely because she had shown no interest in studies.

The defence counsel claimed that the police had falsely implicated the blind couple. However, the court ruled that this contention was "not sustainable for a simple reason that the girl was brought by the accused Reena from the family of her relative and beside them, no one else was residing in the said house where the girl's body was found."
