Dispur: Assam's Cabinet on Wednesday took two important decisions pertaining to one of the most prominent tribes of the states -- the Bodo Kacharis. Today, two very important moves were taken by the Sarbananda Sonowal chaired Cabinet in a bid towards fulfilling the historic BTR Accord on January 27 of this year.

The two key decisions taken by the Assam Cabinet are as follows:

1. Bodo will be the Associate official language for the state of Assam.

2. A Bodo Kachari Autonomous Welfare Council will be constituted outside the 6th schedule area.

Assam's Finance, Health, and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has recently promised that all the clauses in the BTR treaty shall be enacted even as the BTAD districts (Chirang, Kokrajhar, Udalguri, and Baksa) gear up for polls, confirmed the development via an evening tweet. "The state cabinet has taken two important decisions- 1.Bodo will be the Associate official language for the state of Assam. 2. Bodo Kachari autonomous welfare Council outside 6th schedule area for welfare of Bodo community," the Minister wrote in a tweet.

It needs mention here that there has been a long-pending demand for a Boro Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council (BKWAC) outside the Bodo-dominated region. This demand has been reiterated over the years by many of the influential organizations native to the BTAD region.

In September last, various parts of the State witnessed protests which were carried out under the banner of the United Bodo People's Organization (UBPO). Boro Kachari people residing outside the BTAD region have been demanding the BKWAC for a long time.
