Body of Guwahati Mountaineer Deepshikha Hazarika Recovered in Uttarakhand

Deepshikha Hazarika was one of the trainee mountaineers who went missing in the Uttarakhand avalanche a few days back.

GUWAHATI: After a continuous search and rescue mission in the upper reaches of Uttarakhand following the major avalanche that had occurred on October 4, the dead bodies of several of the members of the camp were recovered. One of the latest to be discovered is the body of young Deepshikha Hazarika from Assam who was a part of the team.

Deepshikha Hazarika was an experienced mountaineer participating in this training programme with multiple experiences in the past. She is the daughter of Mr Golap Hazarika, hailing from the Rajgharh region of Guwahati in Assam.

The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi is a premier institution in the field of adventure sports in the country. It was conducting a training programme in advanced mountaineering near Mount Draupadi Ka Danda - II at a height of 17000 ft in the upper stretches of the Himalayas when this incident happened. On October 4, a severe avalanche swept down on the group burying them in the snow above camp-1.

Continuous search and rescue operations were mounted immediately for the total of 61 people who were struck by the natural calamity. As per a report issued by the NIM, the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetian Border Police (ITBP), High Altitude Warfare School, the Indian Air Force, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the District Administration are working together in the effort.

A total of 32 people out of the group of a total of 61 trainees and instructors were rescued from the disaster site. And bodies of 26 people including two instructors and 24 trainees have been recovered so far. 3 trainees are still considered missing with adverse weather conditions hampering the airborne rescue efforts.

As per reports, Deepshikha's father and brother have reached Uttarakhand to bring back the deceased after proper post-mortem procedures.
