DIBRUGARH: The mutilated body of a 20-year-old local youth named Sourav Das was recovered from Sessa River by a team of SDRF from Sivasagar on Sunday.
The panic-ridden people of Lezai-Sessa Tinali have demanded exemplary punishment to those who killed Sourav and dumped his body into the Sessa River on Saturday. The police took Rahmuddin Ali, his wife and Akbar Ali into custody immediately for alleged involvement in the killing of Sourav Das.
The situation turned violent when an angry mob tried to torch Ali's brother's residence on Saturday. However, the timely intervention of police and para-military forces saved the situation. The district administration clamped Section 144 under CrPC in the entire locality to check the further deterioration of law-and-order situation.
Encasing the situation, few organizations have been trying since Saturday evening to colour the incident on communal lines. Subsequently, in protest against the incident 12 hours Dibrugarh bandh has been called.
The Dibrugarh district Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), in a statement issued to the press, condemned the brutal killing of an indigenous youth and demanded stern and exemplary punishment to all accused. President Girin Chetia and general secretary Pritibrata Gohain of AJYCP, in the same breath, appealed to all people of the area not to fall prey to rumour and provocation of communal elements and to maintain communal harmony in the area at any cost.
