Guwahati: The Office of the Bongaigaon Deputy Commissioner will now remain closed until further notice after a staff member was recently found Covid-19 positive.

According to reports, the Deputy Commissioner's office of Bongaigaon informed it will remain closed from Monday and would now operate from the office of the Zilla Parishad.

This has come at a time when many frontline Covid-19 warriors in Assam have tested positive for the dreaded virus. Yesterday, 13 more police personnel had tested positive, taking the total number of uniformed men in the state who had contracted the virus up to 44.

This was confirmed by G P Singh, ADGP, who took to Twitter to convey the news. "Continuing to serve the people of Assam during Covid pandemic, 44 Assam Police personnel have tested positive for COVID-19 till June 28, 2020. 1,127 personnel are under quarantine. They are all in high spirits", Singh said.

At the same time, the total number of Covid-19 tests in Assam has risen to 7,492, out of which 2,390 cases are active currently. So far, 11 people in the state have died due to complications from the virus.

Meanwhile, India has recorded its biggest surge in the number of coronavirus cases in 24 hours for a second consecutive day with 19,906 new patients, taking the total to 5,28,859 infections, the Union Health Ministry said. The country also witnessed 410 coronavirus-related deaths during the period, taking the total number of casualties due to the virus to 16,095.
