Book lovers throng book fair in North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous)

LAKHIMPUR: Book lovers have been seen thronging in the North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) Book Fair which has been underway in the college campus from March 21. On Saturday, the event entered its 6th day with the inspiring responses from the people of various walks. This year Homen Borgohain, Dr. Bhabendranath Saikia were selected as the principal literary figures of the book fair in which separate stalls of the books written by the literary icons have been made available. Readers have shown good responses to these stalls by searching their favourite books of these literary figures along with others.

In addition, a special trade fair has also been organized in the book fair wherein produces of only students are available. The unique trade fair is titled 'Udyami Chatrar Haat' (Trade Fair of Entrepreneur Students). People have also encouraged the entrepreneur students by buying their produces from decorative items to traditional durable food items, from nursery products to agricultural equipment.

Various academic, literary programmes organized on the occasion have added a unique dimension to the book fair which has turned a congregation place of writers and readers. On the second day of the event, Jogananda Borgohain Memorial Literary Award was conferred under the Literary and Magazine section of the College. The programme was attended by columnist Sajjad Hussain. It was followed by a sitting of 'Kitap and Alap' of the college.

An interactive session was organized with prominent writer Dr Bhaskar Jyoti Sarmah on March 23. The program was chaired by Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa. In the programme, discussion was held how to overcome the social and poverty related obstacles to be successful on the basis of Dr. Sarmah's autobiography Pani Metekar Phul.

On the same day, Pona Devi Memorial Jononi Award was conferred to the best graduate of the Department of Assamese of the college. The award has been Instituted by novelist Dhanada Devi. The AASU unit of the college organized a state level competition on March 24. A symposium on Assamese Lyric Literature was held on March 25 under the management of Assistant Professor Dr Hemanta Sarmah.

On the same day, a book named Samaj Sahitya Bigyan by Dr Prabal Kumar Saikia and another book named Sishur Charitra Gothonor Ahila Samuh by Dr. Deepika Borgohain were released. The books have been published by North Lakhimpur College publication, which has been publishing a total of remarkable books up to date.

On Saturday, the Department of Political Science organized a group discussion programme while Debate and Symposium Section organized a debate competition on a topic, 'Overuse of mobile phone has reduced the thirst of reading books'. On the same day a programme on stress management was organized by the Department of Philosophy of the college. The cultural evenings of the book fair held in the past days were dedicated in revered memory of noted litterateur Saurabh Kumar Chaliha, Gyanpith winner Mamoni Roysom Goswami and iconic social worker Indira Miri.
