GUWAHATI: Border Security Force (BSF) personnel shot dead two Bangladeshi nationals during a confrontation at the international border on Wednesday.
According to a BSF communiqué, BSF troops deployed at the Indo-Bangladesh international border under the Kaimari Border Outpost in Cooch Behar observed suspicious movement of 15-20 miscreants on the Bangladesh side of the border fencing, who had illegally violated the sanctity of the border and were trying to smuggle cattle by erecting a cantilever (jhula) with the help of their Indian associates. The BSF jawans challenged them to stop their unwarranted activities and return to Bangladeshi territory. However, the Bangladeshi miscreants did not pay any heed to repeated verbal warnings. The smugglers adopted an aggressive posture by focusing high beam torchlight on the BSF troops. They also started abusing the jawans and resorted to heavy stone pelting on the troops.
In order to foil the smuggling bid by the smugglers, the BSF jawans initially lobbed two non-lethal stun grenades to deter and disperse the Bangladeshi miscreants, but the miscreants and their associates on the Indian side did not pay any heed and started encircling the BSF personnel on duty while being armed with sharp-edged weapons and bamboo sticks. On sensing a threat and finding no other means to save their lives, one BSF fired from his service weapon upon the miscreants. The miscreants then fled from the spot.
Later, BSF troops found one cantilever (jhula) close to the fencing and a dead cow. As per reports from Bangladesh, two Bangladesh-based miscreants succumbed due to bullet injuries sustained in the firing incident.
