Guwahati: Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary of Bodoland People's Front (BPF) officially resigned from his post.

This announcement comes days after the BPF firebrand declared that he will be joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The BJP national parliamentary board approved Daimary's joining yesterday.

Daimary, the founding member of BPF, is expected to join BJP at a formal function in the presence of state CM Sarbananda Sonowal along with Emmanuel Moshary, a high-profile BPF leader, who will also join the saffron team ahead of the Council polls.

His resignation from the prime membership of the BPF just days before the elections of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), where BPF and BJP are in a scuffle against each other, seems to strengthen BJP'S position in the ensuing BTC elections.

Daimary's sudden decision to change his party has irked many supporters which have resulted in staged demonstrations against him and burning of effigies.

Hagrama Mohilary-led BPF has been ruling BTC since its first election in 2005.

Daimary was an MLA in the Assam legislative assembly from 2001-2006 and a Rajya Sabha MP from 2008-2014 and from 2014-2020.

The election of the 40 member BTC will take place in two phases on December 7 and 10, while the counting will take place on December 12.
