SIVASAGAR/DEMOW: A bridge over River Desang at Bokota area in Sivasagar district collapsed on Sunday, breaking into two parts. The incident occured at 9 AM when a stone-filled dumper was crossing the bridge and a major accident was averted as there was very little traffic on the bridge.

The construction of the bridge, that connects Sepon with Sunpura, started in 1971 and was completed in 1977. The bridge had become very weak in the last decade. Road connectivity to Sivasagar, Nazira and Simaluguri areas has been completely cut off from the Bokota area.

Meanwhile, locals came out to streets to protest against the ONGC as the authorities did not respond to their repeated requests for repair of the bridge, as heavy vehicles of ONGC ply through the bridge regularly. Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner reached the spot and assured an investigation into the incident.

Few months ago, bye-election was held in Thowra constituency and then State Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while campaigning for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Sushanta Borgohain, had announced that the works of this bridge would start soon.
