BTC Polls: We want people to witness a Free & Fair Election: DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta

DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta visit Kokrajhar to understand the context of the upcoming election security system to ensure peaceful conduct of BTC polls

Kokrajhar: Ahead of the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Tuesday visited Kokrajhar to review the security arrangement in the poll-bound district. The DGP also held a law enforcement meeting with all the administrative members during his visit where security measures were discussed threadbare.

Speaking to media Mahanta said, "We have identified that most of the polling stations of BTC are either sensitive or very sensitive. Over 30 additional companies of forces will now be deployed and if needed we will deploy more. Although the BTC has a history of bloodshed during the last elections, we want people to see free and fair elections this time."

He further said Legal action will be taken against any party or political leader who commits acts of violence in a peaceful environment during the election.

He further added, "There will be no tolerance for any kind of violence. If any miscreants or political goons have planned to do any subversive activities, I want to warn him of the consequences. They must avoid such ideas."

BTC election is scheduled for 7 and 10 December 2020.

The election would be held in two phases.

In the first phase, the election will be held in Udalguri and Baksa districts on December 7, whereas the date of re-poll, if any has been scheduled for December 8.

The second phase of the poll will be held in Chirang and Kokrajhar districts on December 10 and Re-poll, if any would be held on December 11.

The timing for voting is 7.30 AM to 4.30 PM.

The date of counting the votes is scheduled for December 12,(Saturday) from 8 AM.
