SILCHAR: "Today is one such day when we have redeemed our pledge for a clean and beautiful Silchar. No matter how much the administration or the government endeavour for any change, unless the youth come forward and be a part of this change nothing much could be achieved. On this occasion of National Youths Day, I urge upon the young generation of Cachar to join hands with us in our mission of Swachh Sundar Silchar." This was said by Jessica Lalsim, Executive Officer, Silchar Municipal Board during a programme organised by the Cachar District administration and SMB to commemorate the 159th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, stated a press release.
On Wednesday, Cachar Administration and Silchar Municipal Board observed National Youth Day in a befitting manner with strict adherence to COVID protocol. In 1984, the Government of India declared Swami Vivekananda's birthday – January 12 - as National Youth Day, to honour one of India's greatest philosopher's and spiritual leaders, Vivekananda, and his legacy. Since January 12, 1985, this day has been celebrated.
To commemorate the occasion, a rally was flagged off by Executive officer, Silchar Municipal Board, Jessica Lalsim at the District Sports complex. Leo Club and Silchar Lions Club participated in the rally. The rally started from DSA complex and reached Sadarghat near the Vivekananda statue where officials and members offered floral tributes to the man who emphasised much of his preaching on the importance of cleanliness. The main objective of the rally was also to spread awareness against the dumping of garbage on the roadside.
Emphasizing the aspect of cleanliness, Jessica Lalsim said, "The district administration is taking painstaking efforts to build awareness on Swachhata. In this endeavour, we need the support of the youths to instil civic responsibilities among the masses and pledge not to litter the town. We all need to ensure that the city remains clean. Today on the occasion of National Youth Day, by reiterating to abide by the concept of cleanliness, we can perhaps offer the greatest tribute to Swami Vivekananda who believed in the dictum of work is worship."
Assisting Officer, Silchar Municipal Board, Biswajit Dutta and City project Officer, Rajib Chanda also spoke on the occasion. In his address, he said, "We are appealing to all the citizens of Silchar to click the photos of those who are dumping garbage on the roadside and send it our Facebook page 'Swachh Sundar Silchar'.
