SILCHAR: The battle line was drawn as the teachers and students of Cachar College demanded the immediate resignation of the Principal Dr Siddhartha Shankar Nath. The sit-in at the College gate by the teachers and non-teaching staff entered the second day on Friday.
A group of students also participated in the demonstration demanding immediate removal of Dr. Nath who had allegedly instigated a few students to threaten the agitating teachers on Wednesday at the Principal's chamber. Meanwhile, the central committee of Assam College Teachers' Association has demanded the replacement of the Governing Body president of Cachar College, ShashankaSekhar Dhar with an academician. HimangshuMaral, president of ACTA, along with Cachar zone representative Sudarshan Gupta on Thursday met Director of Higher Education Dr. DharmakantaMili and explained that Dharwas a retired banker and he should be replaced by an academician.
On Wednesday noon, the premiere institute saw an unprecedented incident as a group of students, known for their proximity with the Principal, virtually attacked a delegation of teachers inside the college administrative block. The delegation met Nath to discuss about the charter of demands they had handed over to him a couple of weeks ago. A few students, claiming themselves as ABVP cadres, started shouting against the teachers. They even misbehaved with a lady teacher and threatened her colleagues of dire consequences once they come out on the street. The teachers then called the police and subsequently four students were detained. However, they were later released on PR bond. Police is investigating the incident on the CCTV footage.
