SILCHAR: Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli distributed rice for 43 days to the Anganwadi workers under the District Social Welfare Department's Wheat Based Nutrition Program at fair Price Shop No. 23 in Ward No. 3 at Itkhola Ghat here in Silchar on Monday. Inaugurating the scheme, the DC said, "Nutritional intervention is one of key components of our scientific and holistic approach towards weight management and associated medical condition."
While emphasizing on the objectives of the wheat based Nutrition Programme Cachar DC Keerthi Jalli said, "The programme aims to enlarge the scope of existing nutrition programme by covering additional beneficiaries i,e pre-school Children from 3 years to 6 years through wheat based Nutrition Programme, the objective is to ensure transparency, efficiency and economy in the procurement process through a fair and transparent process."
"Procure rice of required quality quantity at right price to ensure timely availability of foods and for successful implementation of hot cooked meal for pre-school Children" she added.
"The Ministry of women and child development has allocated rice at subsidized at rate of rupees 3 per kg under wheat based Nutrition Programme for implementation of supplementary nutrition programme in the State of Assam," DC Jalli said.
District Social Welfare Officer, Cachar Saswati Som also spoke on the occasion. She said, "This programme is newly introduced in the Department of Social welfare and at present the normal children of age group of 3years to 6years who are enrolled in the Anganwadi centers will avail it."
She further stated that the concern district will purchase the rice from FCI at the rupees 3 per kg and this will be lifted by Gaon Panchayat Samabay Samity from FCI and will later hand over the food stuff to the fair price shops of which they are tagged with the nearest Anganwadi center of the locality. The Anganwadi workers will lift the food stuff from the fair price shops as per quantity allocated depending on the head count of beneficiaries of Anganwadi center.
It is pertinent to mention that this scheme will be beneficial as the Anganwadi Center can save money by purchasing rice from the fair price shops at a price of Rs 3 per kg and distributing it to children and pregnant women as part of the State's new Wheat Based Nutrition Programme. This will save expenditure of the centers which can be diverted towards purchase of the other nutritious food for the children, stated a press release.
