SILCHAR: Based on a CCTV footage, Cachar police in a midnight action nabbed five youths from various parts of Silchar for allegedly attacking a Muslim family on Wednesday late evening. All the five youths were members of the Bajrang Dal, a source in police confirmed. However, Mithun Nath, a leader of Bajrang Dal claimed that these youths were not associated with the outfit.

On Wednesday evening, just after a fiery demonstration by Bajrang Dal, a right wing Hindu outfit in protest against the killing of Harsha, a member of the organisation in Karnataka, a group of youths attacked a car carrying a Muslim family at Trunk Road near All India Radio centre. They pelted stones at the car and manhandled Rabijul Ali Barbhuiyan, 64, a former teacher of a government school. There was no space for 'Bangals' (Bengali Muslim) in the country' the youth shouted. They allegedly pulled the beard of the old man who had his wife, daughter and two minors sitting in the car who too sustained injury. Locals came to their rescue. Barbhuiyan later lodged an FIR with Sadar police.

Meanwhile, police had produced the youths, identified as Niresh Paul, Sunny Deb, Hitesh Ghose, Sushen Das and Chiranjit Singh, to the court. They were sent to judicial custody.
