Cancellation of draft delimitation of constituencies demanded

DOOMDOOMA: “The constituency delimitation and the name change is a part of the ongoing conspiracy to deprive the indigenous people of their political rights and power to govern their permanent homeland.” This was stated by Asam Sanmilita Mahasangha (ASM) in a statement to the press signed by its president Perong Chiri, working president Matiur Rahman and secretary general Purnananda Rava on Thursday. Terming this to be a ‘conspiracy to deprive the indigenous people and snatch away their political rights’ the statement said “It was an offence of contempt of court.”

The Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies will be redetermined on the basis of population only in 2026. The constituencies were redefined in other states of the country in 2005-07. But in Assam that could not be done because objections raised by the organisations and the political parties in view of update of NRC in the State. The statement alleged that the BJP government hastily published a draft by deleting the names of some constituencies, redefining the boundaries of some constituencies and renaming some constituencies under pressure to derive political mileage in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is not finalized in Assam. The then Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi announced on August 13, 2019 that only on the basis of the judgement of the 5-member Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court of Assam Sanmilit Mahasangha’s case Nos. 562/2012, 876/2014, 311/2015 and 68/2, the NRC would be finalized.

The Supreme Court will hear a case of the constituency redetermination on July 25. Therefore, they demanded the immediate cancellation of the draft delimitation of the constituencies. The ASM said it had informed this in a letter to Election Commission (EC) on July 10. It further said the rights of the indigenous peoples of Ahom, Moran, Matak, Chutia, Sonwal, Thengal, Deouri, Tiwa, Koch Rajbongshi, Gariya, Mariya, Deshi, Kaibarta etc. should not be violated under any circumstances.
