Dibrugarh: The police have detained Simanta Jyoti Saikia, the husband of Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH) doctor Ajanta Hazarika for interrogation seeking information on the whereabouts of his wife.

Dr Hazarika has been accused of taking money in lakhs from candidates by promising them jobs in Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway. The police conducted a search operation at her residence at Naliapool in Dibrugarh district and detained her husband Simanta Jyoti Saikia. This was the second search operation conducted by the district police, based on the case registered against her under Case No. 2150/20.

Police said that when they had asked about the whereabouts of his wife, Saikia said that he had no clue. Manoranjan Saikia of Dibrugarh Police station added, "We have picked up Dr Hazarika's husband for interrogation."

Two victims -- Kishore Deb and Ajay Dutta Biswas -- recorded their statements in Dibrugarh CJM court on Wednesday in connection with the 'cash-for-job' scam. The statement of Dr Hazarika's driver, Bhola Tiwari, was also recorded in the court.

It has been alleged that she had taken money from one Amol Nath and two others with a promise to get them appointed in NF Railway.

The complainant had lodged an FIR against Dr Hazarika at Gabharupathar police outpost in Dibrugarh on December 7, 2020, alleging that the doctor had taken about Rs 22 lakh from three job aspirants from Dibrugarh with a promise to provide them with jobs in NF Railway.

Nath alleged that he had transferred half of the amount sought by Dr Hazarika to the bank accounts of Rajeev Parashar at Six Mile in Guwahati.

In another case, Rajeev Parashar was arrested by Guwahati crime branch in October this year for his alleged involvement in extorting money from candidates of various other public service recruitment examinations.
