SILCHAR: Indo-Bangladesh border along Cachar-Karimganj frontier of South Assam remains vulnerable to smugglers active and prowling for every available opportunity to achieve their objective. In fact, cattle from this side of the border are much sought after consumable item in the neighbouring country. From cattle markets of this valley not long ago cows, mother and calf, were made to walk miles after their deal by the new owners, feigning to rear them up as domestic animals. But after the markets close to Bangladesh border were closed by the administration and strict vigilance by BSF, smuggling has come down to great extent, but not stopped completely.

The week end has witnessed at least 7 numbers of cattle and bull including mother and calf having been seized by BSF while being smuggled out to Bangladesh. Bilbari outpost of BSF noticed three persons moving in a suspicious manner, waiting for some leeway to escape with three calves. On being challenged, the miscreants fled towards jungle infested area on this side of the border. Their abortive attempt to move to Bangladesh led to the search of the area from where three calves were recovered and seized. The miscreants who coordinate with their accomplices on either side of the border share information about the movement of BSF.

But the intelligence network of BSF is equally strong to foil their evil design. It was this alert intelligence that led BSF troops of Bhanga BOP to seize 4 numbers of cattle and bull from river Kushiara for being taken out to Bangladesh. The smugglers made their escape good, leaving them behind. The smugglers are often caught, sent to jail and once on bail are back to square one. They have also to meet cruel fate in the hands of much harassed people as happened a few days back at Chandkhira tea estate and as reported in The Sentinel.
