Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launches Orunodoi 2.0 in Jorhat

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched the second phase of the Orunodoi scheme at Jorhat. He informed that 25,544 new beneficiaries had been included in the scheme this year and the total expenditure would be Rs 40,170 crore.

JORHAT: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched the second phase of the Orunodoi scheme at Jorhat. He informed that 25,544 new beneficiaries had been included in the scheme this year and the total expenditure would be Rs 40,170 crore.

The Chief Minister also gave Rs 10 crore as aid to the Tea Research Association and Rs 3 crore to the Konoklota Mahila Urban Cooperative Bank.

Speaking at the ceremony for distribution of cards to beneficiaries under the Orunodoi 2.0 scheme at the Jorhat District Sports Association Ground, Sarma said that Rs 250 was meant for paying power bills, Rs 400 for buying medicines, Rs 200 for dal, Rs 80 for sugar, Rs150 for fruits and Rs 170 for repaying loans presumably taken during COVID-19 pandemic period.

Earlier, the Chief Minister inaugurated the High Performance Sports Training and Rehabilitation Centre within the Jorhat Stadium. One of the highlights of the facility is a dedicated performance lab for para-athletes.

The Chief Minister stated that initially the monthly amount paid to Orunodoi beneficiaries was Rs 830, which was increased to Rs 1,000 and then to Rs 1,250 by his government.

Earlier, a short documentary on the impact of Orunodoi scheme on women empowerment across Assam, which included a clipping of the announcement of the scheme by Chief Minister Sarma, then a Finance Minister in the Sarbananda Sonowal-led government at the State Assembly, was screened.

Jorhat Lok Sabha MP and Rajya Sabha MP -Topon Kumar Gogoi and Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, State Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, who is also the Guardian Minister of Jorhat district, MLAs of Jorhat, Mariani and Dergaon, were among the dignitaries present on the occasion.

Neog, who delivered the welcome address, stated that the money would be deposited into the bank accounts of the beneficiaries in November.

Sarma later visited the Mahavir Lachit Barphukan’s Maidam at Gohain Gaon, Meleng of Teok constituency on the eastern outskirts where the ongoing ambitious project for beautification of the maidam is underway. He next visited Kamalabari Xatra at Titabar and in the evening visited the Jorhat district office of BJP here.
