LAKHIMPUR: “The Citizenship Amendment Act must be scrapped. The people of the State and the Chutia Students’ Union have never accepted and will not accept this ‘community destructive’ black Act, which will pose tremendous threat to the Assamese culture and language and destroy the existence of the indigenous communities of the State. We have made it clear to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and minister Himanta Biswa Sarma once again. If the Chief Minister has moral courage, he should stand with the people of the State and initiate move to scrap the Act in order to keep the State free from aliens,” said Lakhimpur district unit Chutia Students’ Union president Jayanta Hazarika and secretary Amrit Das on Monday. The dignitaries of the organization made this statement while initiating a hunger strike in front of the Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner’s office opposing the Act.

Notably, as a part of its consecutive agitation programmes, the organization has re-initiated the 24-hour long hunger strike from Monday demanding the immediate scrapping of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019. The programme started from 12.00 pm on Monday and it will conclude at 12.00 pm on Tuesday. Along with the district committee dignitaries, the members of the organization took part in the anti-CAA programme.
