GUWAHATI: Assam's chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has stated that eviction drives will continue in the state until the end of his government's term, despite the Guwahati High Court criticizing the police for destroying the homes of at least six families in connection with an arson case in the Nagaon district of Assam.
CM Sarma made this statement on Thursday while attending a few events in Guwahati. When asked about the high court's censure of the police for torching a few defendants' homes in the Batadrava police station burning case, he responded: "Within the confines of the law, our government has conducted numerous such operations in the state.
However, in the instance involving the Nagaon police station, the superintendent of police acknowledged in front of the court that there were certain errors made when taking action. We must correct our mistakes because they might happen at some point."
According to the Chief Minister, if any illegal measures were taken by the officials, the government will investigate and take appropriate legal action.
"However, it does not follow that the eviction will end. We shall conduct an eviction whenever an illegal incursion is discovered. This government isn't in place to do nothing. We shall carry on working for 365 days to five years, "Added he.
Recently, the Assam government began an eviction campaign in the Barpeta district of Lower Assam. Police detained Baghbor politician Sherman Ali who was opposing the eviction drive.
Bulldozers have begun to move. During the eviction drive at Satra Kanara hamlet in the Baghbor constituency, Ahmed staged a sit-in protest. A campaign to evict 400 bighas of unlawfully occupied government land has been started by the government.
Ahmad has asked the authorities to make a written pledge on the rehabilitation of the landless people. A total of 40 families had to be evicted during the operation, according to the authorities, which claimed to have given prior warning.
