GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal who is in Majuli participated in a plantation drive under Carbon Neutrality Project at Kamalabari Ghat in the district on Sunday.
It may be noted that the project in Majuli is first of its kind in the county and is believed to be an important step towards a zero carbon district which is being given shape under discretionary grant by Chief Minister Assam for 2019-20. Under the project 1100 plants belonging to flower, fruits and medicines which have the capacity to survive the onslaught of flood have been planted. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sonowal while congratulating the people of Majuli on getting the plants of different species, requested them to extend their cooperation for making the project a success. He also said that the success of the project will also be crucial for achieving zero carbon status of Majuli.
Chief Minister Sonowal also visited the erosion affected areas of Kamalabari Ghat and took stock of erosion mitigation and protection works of the district administration. It may be noted that for getting the accurate picture of erosion protection work, Sonowal walked a long distance on the bank of the Brahmaputra. Chief Minister Sonowal also took stock of the construction of a cricket stadium in Majuli which is being constructed under the aegis of Assam Cricket Association. ACA's president Ramen Dutta was also present on the occasion. It is expected that once completed the cricket talents of Majuli would get state of the art infrastructure to hone their cricketing acumen, stated a release.
Sonowal also made a visit to a retail outlet of women SHG products in Majuli. The exhibition cum sale has been organised under Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission. Chief Minister Sonowal having seen the products appreciated the artistic expression of the women and thanked Panchayat and Rural Development department for giving all facilities to the women to showcase their skills. He said that the women's creations are a huge stride towards Atmanirbhar Assam.
Deputy Commissioner Majuli Vikram Kairi, SP Aparna Natarajan, CEO Zila Parishad Naranarayan Nath, heads of departments and a host of other functionaries were present on the occasion.
