CME on diagnosis and management of breast cancer organized in Tezpur

Assam Cancer Care Foundation and Tezpur Medical College and Hospital (TMCH) had organized a CME on ‘Diagnosis and Management of Breast Cancer – Recent Updates’ at the TMCH auditorium on Wednesday.

TEZPUR: Assam Cancer Care Foundation and Tezpur Medical College and Hospital (TMCH) had organized a CME on 'Diagnosis and Management of Breast Cancer – Recent Updates' at the TMCH auditorium on Wednesday.

Specialists from ACCF, TMCH, TMC -Kolkata participated in the programme along with faculty and PG students of TMCH with the latest imaging technology and other diagnostic tools, cancer diagnosis is done comparatively early, increasing the rate of cure globally.

Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF) is a joint initiative of the Government of Assam and the Tata Trusts, established to create a three-tier comprehensive distributed cancer care network to provide accessible and affordable care for the underserved.

Prof. (Dr) Karuna Hazarika, MD, DMRD, Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent TMCH; Dr (Col) Sajal Sen, Chief Operating Officer, ACCF; Brig Dr A D Sud, Brig (Med) Head Quarters, 4 Corps; Dr Deepak Mishra, Director Lab Services, Tata Medical Centre Kolkata; other dignitaries along with faculty and postgraduate students had participated in the day-long event.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof (Dr) Karuna Hazarika, said that the latest imaging technology and other diagnostic tools have helped diagnosis of cancer quite early and thus, cure rates are increasing globally.

Dr Venkata Pradeep, Medical Oncologists at Tezpur Cancer Centre of ACCF, stated that survival in metastatic breast cancer increased by 25per cent compared to 1980s with current medications. A recent study shows that the number of women who died from breast cancer dropped by about 40 per cent in the past 25 years, which translates into more than 3,22,000 lives saved during that period. There are now good supportive medications to administer safe chemotherapies.

Dr Sanjeev K Gupta, Senior Radiation Oncologists (Tezpur Cancer Centre of ACCF), said, "In early breast cancer breast-preserving surgery plus radiotherapy is as good as mastectomy (removal of entire breast) with respect to the treatment outcome and in particular, cosmetic outcomes. Advanced Radiation techniques like IMRT & DIBH may minimize toxicity associated with Radiotherapy."
