College Lecturer Along With 5 Others Involved in Instigating Violence in Gorukhuti, Says Assam CM

Himanta Biswa Sarma said that he has ordered a CBI inquiry into the firing incident that took place in the Dhalpur area of Assam's Darrang district.

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government has found evidence of involvement of at least six persons in the Gorukhuti violence incident.

Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said, "From the poor, landless families certain people have collected Rs. 28 lakh saying that they are going to convince the government and there will be no eviction. We have the evidence. When they could not register a case against the eviction drive they mobilised these people and created havoc on that particular day," said Dr Sarma.

"We have the names of six people with due intelligence that Rs. 28 lakh was credited. Apart from the day of the incident in the name of carrying food articles to the evicted families PFI visited the site. Evidence is now emerging indicating certain people including a lecturer from one college of Assam being involved. So, all these things are emerging and the government is enquiring. The eviction was done against 60 families, and so were from these 10 thousand people came," the Chief Minister further added.

Meanwhile, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that he has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the firing incident that took place in the Dhalpur area of Assam's Darrang district.

Earlier in the day, while addressing the media, Darrang district Additional Superintendent of Police Rupam Phukan, had told that the authority initiated action only after the locals started pelting stones at the police.
