Demand to control price hike, mitigate flood and erosion problem

LAKHIMPUR: In support of demands raised to control the sky-rocketing prices of all essential commodities, mitigate flood and erosion problem, resolve the burning unemployment problem, the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPI-M) and two more leftist political parties have jointly initiated a series of week-long agitational programmes.
As part of the agitational programmes, these political parties staged 'Gana Bikhyobh' in North Lakhimpur town on Friday. At first the activists of political parties, led by Lakhimpur district committee CPI general secretary Arup Kalita and Lakhimpur district committee CPI-M general secretary Amiya Kumar Hundique, assembled at the CPI office in North Lakhimpur town. Then they took out a protest rally in the town and demonstrated for several hours in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office of Lakhimpur.
Through the series of the same stir, these leftist political parties further demanded the State and Union governmCPI, erosion , floodents to withdraw the sub-taxes and surcharges imposed upon the petro-products, to strengthen the Public Distribution System (PDS) and to supply the essential commodities like rice, wheat, flour, dal, mustard oil, salt, sugar etc through the PDS, to increase the MGNREGA funds, to introduce an act to implement a scheme for paying unemployed allowance, to introduce an act for the assurance of employment in both, rural and urban areas, to fill up all the vacant posts lying in the government departments, to provide compensation to the flood and erosion affected families, to stop the construction of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) until and unless the security to the people living in the downstream of the River Subansiri is ensured. The political parties also demanded to increase the financial aid, which has been given to the families incapable of paying the income tax, up to Rs. 7,500.
