GUWAHATI: Congress leader and former minister Rockybul Hussain categorically ruled out quitting the party and joining the ruling BJP.

Claiming that his earlier statement was twisted by a section of media, Hussain said that he would not join the ruling party under any circumstances. On a lighter tone, he added that he would join the BJP if cows started climbing trees.

"Earlier, what I wanted to say was that the Congress is a strong party. It remained strong even after some heavyweights quit the party. Once, late Pranab Mukharjee resigned from the party but he later returned to the party. But some have twisted my statement," he said.

The former minister also claimed that only Congress could unseat the BJP from power. According to him ups and downs could be seen everywhere and the Congress has been currently facing such a situation.

"Once the BJP had 4-5 MLAs in Assam. But today, it has 60 MLAs. They have done a great task. Now, we have 27 MLAs. So, it will be easier for us to increase our number of MLAs to 63 or 60," he further said. Hussain also attacked the BJP for a price rise.

It is to be mentioned here that several Congress Members of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the state are in queue to join Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claimed Assam BJP Chief Bhabesh Kalita.

''More will join us in the coming days as several Congress MLAs are in the queue,'' he added. Meanwhile, while countering BJP over the statement made by Kalita, Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah has the saffron party focus on the development of Assam, instead of luring and poaching MLAs of other parties.

Along with, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Bhabesh Kalita virtually attended the BJP national executive meeting in New Delhi. Earlier, two MLAs of the Congress party -- Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain had quit the party and joined the BJP. Later, the duo won the by-elections from their respective constituencies.
