Congress lined up 30 Star Campaigners for Assembly Polls

Party’s interim chief Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and party leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Salman Khurshid will be campaigning in the state.

NEW DELHI: With just a few days left for the Assam Assembly Election, the Congress has lined up a total of 30 star campaigners to woo voters from different parts of the state.

In a letter forwarded to the Secretary of the Election Commission of India (ECI), Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal has named the list of star campaigners for the state assembly elections of Assam.

The letter reads, "The following leaders of Indian National Congress, who would be campaigning for the ensuing First Phase of elections to the Legislative Assembly of Assam to be held on 27th of March 2021."

As per the list, the party's interim chief Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and party leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Salman Khurshid, Jitendra Singh and Sachin Pilot will be campaigning in the state.

The list also includes the Congress General Secretary Mukul Wasnik, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, and Bhupesh Baghel from Chhattisgarh.

Top Congress leaders from the other Northeast states including former Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma and former Arunachal Pradesh CM Nabam Tuki will also join the party's campaigning in Assam.

However, it needs to be mentioned here that the group of 'dissident' leaders name has not been included in the list. Senior leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kapil Sibal, Anand Sharma and Manish Tewari who recently voiced their concern over the functioning of the party has not find mention in the list of star campaigners. 

Elections for the 126 assembly constituents will be held in three phases. The first phase of the election will be on March 27, in which 47 seats in 12 districts will go to the polls. In the second phase, 39 constituencies in 13 districts will go to the polls on April 1. Whereas, a total of 41 constituencies in 12 districts will go to the polls on April 6.

Earlier, Congress also released the list of 30 star campaigners for the West Bengal Assembly Election 2021. Sonia Gandhi, Dr Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Sachin Pilot, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Abhijit Mukherjee and Mohd Azharuddin are some of the prominent leaders who have been chosen as the star campaigners for the Assembly polls in West Bengal.
