LAKHIMPUR: Lakhimpur District Congress Committee (LDCC) staged massive protest programme in North Lakhimpur town condemning the manhandling of Rahul Gandhi incident.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday was pushed and fell on the ground in a tussle with the Uttar Pradesh police after he, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and scores of party workers were stopped from marching on the Delhi-Noida highway on their way to Hathras to meet the family of the gang rape victim who died on Tuesday. Priyanka Gandhi was also allegedly pushed and there were attempts to throw her to the ground. Subsequently, the Gandhis were detained for violating a ban on large gatherings.
Demanding justice for the rape victim and protesting against this alleged 'inhuman' harassment on Rahul Gandhi, the Congress activists, including the members of the brother and sister organizations, burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditya Nath in North Lakhimpur town. The protesters rocked the environment by shouting various slogans to flay the Prime Minister and the UP Chief Minister.
LDCC vice-president Opel Hazarika, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee member Jyoti Gogoi, LDCC general secretaries Ganga Jyoti Tayegam, Dhan Mahammad, Dhrubajyoti Senapati, former Lakhimpur MLA Ghana Buragohain, and other leaders took part in the protest.
Leading the programme, LDCC president Dr. Joy Prakash Das came down heavily on the BJP government in connection with the issue. "Democracy is under threat under the regime of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). We have vehemently condemned the physical torture on Rahul Gandhi and we will never tolerate it," said Dr. Joy Prakash Das in front of media persons.
