GUWAHATI: When there might be boundless criticism of incidents of cops firing on criminals, three offenders have been shot at by cops in two separate incidents after they attempted to escape while making an endeavor to escape from custody by opposition events in Assam. In the essential incident, two affirmed ganja smugglers have been shot at by cops after they attempted to escape in Srirampur on Friday evening. Prateek Thube, SP Kokrajhar, expressed dependent on intelligence inputs, a truck was blocked at Srirampur and upon intensive checking, around 840 kg of ganja worth Rs 2 crore was recovered from a secret compartment. This kind of crime in Assam is intolerable.

Thube added that while recovering another 10 kg of ganja, which the denounced had covered up along the highway, the two accused attacked the police personnel and attempted to get away. To stop them, the police team resorted to control firing in which both the charged were deplorably injured.

On the other hand, another person Jehirul Islam, who allegedly kidnapped a girl and her child on June 22, was injured in police firing on Friday evening in Tamulpur, Baksa district. It has been reported that police rescued the mother and daughter on Friday evening from Kishanganj in Bihar with the help of Bihar Police.

A police officer, who was present in the process therapy on the GMCH, said that Jahirul was arrested on Thursday from Guwahati. He was taken to the crime location when he tried to escape from custody by grabbing police arms and was shot in the leg.

Seeing all these, Congress, AJP, and Raijor Dal have come down intently on chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for justifying the strategy of police officers to shoot at criminals or accused who attack or escape from custody. Through the first-ever convention of officers-in-charge that occurred on July 5, the CM said that there must be zero tolerance towards such accused and criminals. Similarly, Akhil Gogoi urged that since June 22, there have been more than 12 such incidents of police firing at accused and criminals. These are the indications of Assam moving towards an oppressive system. He pointed a question that now, they are firing at the accused but what is the guarantee they will not fire at political opponents in the future.

As the news of Assam criminals, smugglers, criminals trying to escape in Srirampur came to light, such crime incidents of attack on police personnel or cops firing on criminals are not tolerable. The news of Assam smugglers is common as well. Somewhere around 12 suspected insurgents and criminals have been killed and handfuls, along with rape accused and cattle smugglers, harmed in police encounters in Assam for the reason that second BJP-led authorities expected energy.
