Guwahati: Assam's Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna yesterday warned through a tweet that "complacency" is resulting in a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases across the country.

Pointing at the rise in the number of COVID cases across the nation, the Chief Secretary said that it is the result of 3 factors: opening up of the economy (amid the 'unlock' directive, the rise in the number of COVID-19 tests, as well as "complacency."

"Maximum number of cases reported in India today! Three reasons for increasing cases in India are believed to be 1) More testing 2) Opening of economy 3) Complacency," Kumar Sanjay Krishna wrote in a tweet.

In recent times, the Chief Secretary has consistently lashed out at certain sections of the society for not adding by the COVID-19 guidelines propounded by the Government. Sanjay Krishna, at one point, has even claimed that another lockdown in the state could be in the offing if people continue to flagrantly disregard the rules and regulations: such as the wearing of masks and maintaining social distancing. Talking to media, the CS has also said that India is yet to witness its peak of the COVID-19 curve -- a view that is supported by experts and scientists.

Recently, the Chief Secretary promised "visible action" against those who openly flout the COVID-19 guidelines. Taking to Twitter, he wrote, "It has been noticed that people are not following precautionary steps and are violating the COVID Protocols. From Monday onwards there shall be visible strict action taken against those who violate the norms of social distancing or found not wearing a face mask." In his tweet, he also tagged the official Twitter handle of the Assam police, urging them to take action.

At the same time, Assam's health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that the state's health machinery is stretch to the limit as far as providing oxygen to the COVID-19 patients in the state is concerned.

India's COVID-19 Surge:

India registered 78,761 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, the biggest single-day spike in the world since the pandemic began, just as the government began easing restrictions to help the battered economy.

The surge raised India's tally to over 3.5 million and came as the government announced the reopening of the subway in New Delhi, the capital. It also will move ahead with limited sports and religious events next month.

With a daily surge of around 75,000 cases each day, India is now registering the biggest surges among all the countries in the world.
