GOALPARA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a dharna in front of the Goalpara DC's office on Tuesday against the enactment of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021.

Hundreds of volunteers gathered at the site about at 11.30 am, sat in protest and shouted slogans against the new law. Speaking to the media persons, Nani Das, district secretary of the organization, said, "The State already has a Cattle Protection Act since 1950. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could have amended that law. But by virtue of the absolute majority, they have forcefully passed the bill without taking the opposition into confidence in the assembly." Das further alleged that the new law would harm the farmers and cow owners most.

"Apart from the BJP which terms cow as gau Mata, people of Assam call it as gau dhan because during the hardship they sell it and utilize the money. However, after the advent of the new law, it has become almost impossible for the farmers to sell off their cattle," added Das.

Later, the protesters submitted a memorandum at the DC's office addressing the Governor of Assam to reconsider the position of the farmers post enactment of the law.
