Crackdown on illegal activities conducted in Sonitpur

TEZPUR: A series of successful raids were conducted against drugs, illegal gambling, cattle smuggling and illicit liquor at different parts of the Sonitpur district.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Sonitpur police under the supervision of Sushanta Biswa Sarma, Superintendent of Police, and Additional SP, (Headquarters) Madhurima Das. The operation team was lead by OC, Tezpur Sadar Police Station, Mintu Boro, SI, Tarun Kurmi and staff searched the house premises of one Imrajul Islam (23), resident of Nizamiabasti village under Tezpur PS, and recovered five packets of soap boxes in plastic packets containing 66 grams of suspected heroin. A mobile phone was seized and the accused was apprehended.

The market value of the seized contraband drugs is estimated at around Rs 5 lakhs in the international market, said OC, Mintu Boro.

In another raid was conducted by Sonitpur police led by SI Simanta Pathak, IC Borghat OP under Tezpur PS, a search operation was conducted in the house of Saharul Hassan (30), resident of Bhumuraguri area under Tezpur PS. Around 20 plastic containers containing suspected heroin weighting 26 gram and cash amounting to Rs 44,830, two empty soap cases used for concealing drugs and100 empty drugs containers were recovered. All the recovered articles have been seized and the accused apprehended for further interrogation.

In yet another incident of cow smuggling, based on secret input, Sonitpur police recovered 23 cattle transported in four vehicles coming from the Tezpur area. Police apprehended eight persons involved in this cattle smuggling. Further investigation is going on.

A raid was conducted by Sonitpur police led by DSP (Headquarters) Luit Talukdar along with IC Mahaibhairab, Kalpajyoti Borah and Kacharigaon OP. During the search operation in the house of drug peddler Jashaskar Kalita, resident of Mazgaon area under Tezpur PS, 9 empty drug containers and one used syringe were recoverd. DSP Talukdar said that on further interrogation, the accused revealed the names of some more drug peddlers. Accordingly search was made and three plastic containers containing 3.81 grams of suspected heroin and cash amounting to Rs 3,000 were recovered from the possession of Sahidul Islam (27), resident of Gotlong Near Biscuit Factory, and Abdul Gafur (21), resident of Natunbasti, both under Tezpur PS. They were apprehended for further interrogation, Talukdar added.

Three more persons were arrested in this connection. They have been identified as Selim Hussain (22), resident of Gotlong Bhitarsuti, Ranjan Das (19), resident of Kekurapul area, and Aman Ahmed (19), resident of Kacharigaon all under Tezpur PS. Police also seized a car without registration and a motorcycle bearing registration number AS12L 0481, informed DSP Luit Talukdar.
