Crackdown on illegal activities in Sonitpur district

TEZPUR: A series of successful raids were conducted against illegal gambling, cattle smuggling, fake gold and illegal saw mills at different parts of the Sonitpur district recently.

Acting on tip off, a joint operation conducted by Montu Das, OC Dhekiajuli Police Station and IC Singari OP along with Dhekiajuli Forest officials at Benchimari village near the bank of Belsiri River and recovered one illegal wood saw mill machine (Bemch mill) with pump set and a Magic truck bearing registration number As-13 BC 4212 loaded with wood, logs, wood planks etc. The seized articles have been handed over to Forest Department and further investigation is on to apprehended the accused persons involved in these illegal activities, Police officials said.

In yet another incident of cow smuggling, a successful operation was conducted by Montu Das, OC Dhekiajuli PS and CI Missamari. During the operation, a cattle-laden truck was seized at Rongagor village under Dhekiajuli Police station and was going to Nagaon. OC, Montu Das said that the 30 cattle have been seized from the truck bearing registration number HR 55Q 7358. Three persons were arrested in this connection. The arrested were identified as Burhan Uddin and Gulzar Hussain, both of residents of Rongagor village under Dhekiajuli LAC and Sofikul Islam, resident of under Juria Police Station in Nagaon district.

Another raid was conducted by Sonitpur police against teer agents in Sonitpur district. Two teer and gambling agents were arrested at Gotanga area under Bebejia OP of Tezpur Sadar Police Station and teer books, teer note sheets, cash Rs 7,840, two mobile phones and a Scooty bearing registration number AS12V-7730 were recovered from their possessions. The arrested were identified as Tapan Deka (36), resident of Mazordeka Chuburi, and Mohan Borah (46), resident of Gotanga under Tezpur Police station in Sonitpur district.

Sonitpur police also apprehended one Saidul Islam, resident of Dikraijan village under Tezpur PS, red-handed at Dikraijan area while he was trying to sell fake gold, police officials said. The whole operation was carried out under the supervision of Dr Dhananjay Ghanawat, Superintendent of Police, and Additional SP (Headquarter) Madhurima Das.
