Guwahati: Following no fresh reports of any untoward incident, the Cachar district administration lifted the curfew in areas falling under the Malugram Police Outpost of Silchar town from 6 am on Friday, August 7.
In an order issued to this effect on Friday, District Magistrate, Keerthi Jalli said the curfew has been withdrawn from areas under Malugram Police Outpost of Silchar town "in view of a return to normalcy and as no untoward incident has been reported during the relaxation of curfew from 12 noon to 5 pm on Thursday."
Mobile miking was made by the DDIPR personnel in the early hours announcing the withdrawal of the curfew order with immediate effect.
The administration had to impose curfew in Ghoniwala and adjoining areas under Malugram Police Outpost on Monday following the pelting of stones between two groups on Sunday late evening.
In view of the incident that took place ahead of the "bhoomi pujan" of Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the district administration convened a meeting on Monday in which various segments of society and representatives of political parties cutting across party lines underscored the need to augment the efforts of the district administration in restoring peace, and maintaining law and order and communal harmony in the town.
The meeting resolved to enhance administration-public coordination, quell rumor-mongering and reactivate peace committees for ushering in durable peace and tranquility in society amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Terming the incident of pelting of stones as the "handiwork of miscreants out to disturb peace in the society", the participants demanded stern action against the perpetrators who triggered the trouble. The participants thanked the civil and police administrations for taking swift action and preventing the incident from snowballing into a major law and order problem.
