Curtains down on 226th Barechaharia Bhaona Festival in Jamugurihat

JAMUGURIHAT: The 226th edition of Barechaharia Bhaona Festival, 2023 concluded on Thursday.

On the last day also, people from distant places thronged the Bhaona festival site. A series of competitions organized by the exhibition sub-committee were held on Thursday afternoon which was followed by a prize distribution ceremony. The bhaona celebration committee felicitated nearly 30 distinguished personalities from the greater Jamugurihat area who have contributed in the field of art, culture, literature and for overall development of Jamugurihat.

Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya, chief advisor of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) inaugurated the cultural programme organized on the occasion of the closing ceremony of the Bhaona festival. Inaugurating the cultural night, Dr Bhattacharya spoke about the uniqueness of Assamese culture and made an appeal to all to work unitedly for enriching the cultural diversity of the State. He further appealed to the public to join in the Assamese nation-building process.

Singer Angaraag Papon Mahanta and his musical band performed a music concert. The exhibition stalls attracted a good number of visitors. The exhibition site installed by Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra invited a good number of visitors. The other stalls, including irrigation department, replica of historic Boka Khesa Bhaona, Chakrabyuhu, Kanyaka, besides other cottage and stalls of local artisans, also attracted the attention of visitors.

Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the second day of the Bhaona festival on Wednesday. Sarma said that the State Government would provide support to introduce the dignified Bhaona festival in the global platform. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who attended the inaugural session on second day of the Bhaona festival, termed Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev as an architect of modern Assamese society.

The Bhaona festival began on March 6 and concluded on March 9 with a four-day programme.

A total of 42 bhaonas were performed in 21 kholas in two days by different bhaona teams. The next edition of Barechaharia Bhaona Festival will be held in 2028.
