Damaged roads, bridges, culverts being repaired: Chirang District Commissioner

KOKRAJHAR: Chirang District Commissioner Narendra Kumar Shah held a press conference regarding the current floods in the Chirang district. He informed that although the district was not affected by the first wave of floods, a total of 111 villages had been affected in the second wave.

The floods that started on June 15 had caused severe flooding on June 18 and affected a total of 20,231 people in the district. As a result, 15 relief camps had to be set up in Sidli, Bangtal and Bijni Revenue Circle areas of the district. As of now, a total eight villages in the district have been affected by the floods with three in Bengtal Revenue Circle and five in Bijni Revenue Circle. Currently in six relief camps in the district, 1,310 people are taking shelter.

Deputy Commissioner Narendra Kumar Shah said that a total of 9,839 livestock were affected and six were swept away in the ongoing floods. People trapped in floods in some flood-affected villages in the northern part of the district were assisted by the district administration, SDRF, SSB and district police. They rescued 514 people from Shishubari and Madarpur area. So far, the district administration has distributed 500.68 quintals of rice, 101.26 quintals of pulses, 30.55 quintals of salt, 3055.48 litres of mustard oil, 335 quintals of green fodder, 2089 tarpaulins and 540 mosquito nets.

As such, repairs are being done in flood affected roads, bridges and culverts by the departments concerned in the district at the initiative of the district administration.

The press conference was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Ajit Kumar Sarmah and District Project Officer of District Disaster Management Authority Dhanjit Das.
