MANGALDAI: Taking a serious note on the physical attack on the on-duty staff of the Revenue department and the Gram Pradhan at village Duliapara under Dalgaon Revenue Circle in Darrang district on Tuesday by an organized gang of encroachers, Darrang district administration on Thursday demolished the dwelling houses of four absconding criminals.

Accompanied by a large contingent of armed police and para-military forces and Revenue officials, in presence of Superintendent of Police, Raj Mohan Ray, Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ) Rupam Phukan and Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) Pranjal Borah, Circle Officer of Dalgaon Revenue Circle Sameer Choudhury on Thursday carried out the demolition drive using excavators.

However, Circle Officer Sameer Choudhury made it clear that the demolition drive was not related to the unfortunate incident of physical attack on the Revenue staff and Gram Pradhan on duty on Tuesday.

"The district administration has carried out the demolition drive today on four families who have long been encroaching upon the government land. The government will clear all the encroached government land in a phased manner," said Circle Officer Sameer Choudhury.

Significantly, this demolition drive covered the dwelling houses of encroachers Jahur Ali and his son Faizur Ali, Abdul Gafur and his son Shahajuddin Ali who were also the prime accused in the physical attack on the Revenue staff. All the accused encroachers and their family members since Tuesday have reportedly been absconding to avoid arrest. However, the villagers extended all cooperation to the administration in carrying out the demolition drive peacefully.

On the other hand, two prime absconding accused persons, namely Abdul Gafur and Jahur Ali on seeing the tough action initiated by the administration, surrendered before the police on Thursday while three other accused persons are still at large.

On Tuesday, an organized group of encroachers on government land had physically attacked a Gram Pradhan and Revenue staff while the latter went to the village to hand over a plot of government land measuring 1 bigha 4 kathas and 15 lessa to NRL for construction of pipeline.
