TEZPUR: Prithiraj Rava, Tezpur MLA, inaugurated the De-addiction-cum-Rehabilitation Centre for Sonitpur at Kharati, Mazgaon in Tezpur on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

A brief ceremony was held on the occasion which was attended by Assistant Commissioner and i/c DSWO Kabita Phangchoi, DIPRO Neena Baruah, eminent educationist Ananda Boruah, and resource person for the occasion, Dr Pradip Kumar Sharma, Psychiatrist, Kanaklata Civil Hospital, staff and members of the DACRC.

Speaking on the occasion, the MLA, Tezpur asked the officials concerned to conduct awareness drives among the students and the youth about the ill effects of drug abuse in order to deter them from abusing such substances. The MLA also distributed prizes to the top two winners of an essay competition held on the theme 'Impact of Drug Abuse on Health and Society'. Karishmita Kataki ( Tezpur Government Girls' HS and MP School) and Nikita Bora (Tezpur Government Girls' HS and MP School) won the first and second prize respectively.

Resource person for the occasion, Psychiatrist at Kanaklata Civil Hospital, Dr PK Sharma gave a detailed overview of the pattern of drug use in the country and laid stress on the need to put in concerted efforts by all sections of the society to fight the menace of drug abuse. He also called upon the authorities to take up increased awareness programmes about the ill effects of drug abuse, specially among children and the youth. And for those who are already addicted to substance use, he laid stress on the need to take proper steps for their rehabilitation so that they can be brought back into the mainstream.

Eminent educationist and former vice-Principal of Darrang College, Ananda Boruah spoke on the role of parenting in the prevention of drug abuse and also for overall development of a child. DSWO i/c Kabita Phangchoi also spoke on the occasion. Project Coordinator, DACRC, Mallika Goswami, Psychologist, Annapurna Thakuria, Counsellor, Banasri Kalita and other staff of the centre were also present on the occasion.
