GUWAHATI: Large-scale soil erosion in different parts of Assam has been causing panic among residents for the past one to two months.
In Dhubri district, however, erosion has resulted in something even more. A dead body, which was buried around three decades ago on the bank of a river in the district (Dhubri district), got exposed on Thursday after a portion of a land of the river's bank was eroded.
As per reports, the water level in the river has gradually increased owing to heavy rainfall for the last few days. A portion of a cemetery on its banks got inundated after which the matter came to light. Around one-fourth portion of the dead body became visible, much to the surprise of the local residents. The incident has taken place at Bhelengamari village in Dhubri district. Elderly persons of the area claimed the man Kuddus Ali was buried in a burial site there around 30 years ago.
There was no stench found in and around the place from where the dead body came out. The cloth which was used to wrap the body was found in a good condition. A group of local people took the initiative to save the dead body and as part of it the body was covered with bamboo and other items. The body will be completely exposed if the river swells up further in the coming days.
A local resident said Kuddus was a reserved and shy kind of person, who always remained busy in himself. He used to be a very religious man, who worshipped a lot, the resident said.
On Wednesday, the Indian Meteorological Department issued a notice predicting heavy rainfall in the Northeast region for 24 to 48 hours. Assam has been one of the worst affected states in this region because of rainfall and floods in the past few years.
