TINSUKIA: The draft proposal for delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies has been viewed to be catastrophic for tea garden communities as 35 constituencies where tea voters were decisive factors are likely to be wiped out from the political map, apprehends Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS).

Raju Sahu, secretary of ACMS Panitola branch and former Chabua MLA, in a press release stated that abolition of certain constituencies like Lahowal in Dibrugarh district and creation of new constituency like Makum in Tinsukia district were deliberate attempts to marginalize the tea community segments. Recent comments by the Chief Minister on the status of tea community were an indication, alleged Sahu adding that some state BJP leaders meticulously embarked to annihilate the tea tribe communities politically even as a Union Minister, cabinet minister and a good number of legislators from the tea tribe community represented the State.

He also questioned as to why the Election Commission of India was in such a hurry to undertake delimitation process in Assam even as all India delimitation exercise will take place in 2026. Sahu also alleged that the State-level Delimitation Committee virtually ignored demographic pattern and entity of tea tribes of Assam. He also alleged that the draft delimitation document was prepared unilaterally and undemocratically without the opinion of public, besides the committee ought to have a retired Judge, Election Commission, 5 MPs and 5 MLAs drawn from all parties as members, Sahu claimed.
