GUWAHATI: The Assam Cha Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), the biggest union of tea garden workers in the state, has demanded that bonus be provided to tea garden workers before the occasion of Durga Puja.
Durga Puja, one of the major festivals in Assam, starts on October 11. It will conclude on October 14.
As per reports, the tea workers' organisation has asked tea gardens of the state to provide 20 per cent bonus to the workers. The Sangha had last month written to tea groups like ABITA, ATPA, TAI, BCP and NETA pressing for maximum bonus to tea garden workers.
According to the Bonus Act, 1965 the minimum bonus for tea garden workers is 8. 33 per cent and the maximum bonus is 20 per cent.
Sangha general secretary R. Gowala said they would like to request the tea gardens to announce the quantum of bonus and pay the same within three weeks ahead of Durga Puja. He added that they are optimistic that all the tea gardens would make payments of maximum quantum of bonus to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the tea garden workers. He also requested the tea gardens to pay to the tea garden workers in cash instead of cheques.
Assam has approximately 800 tea gardens. The tea gardens are quite well-known not only nationally but internationally. Indeed, the gardens attract tourists from several corners of the world. Assam is a place where you'll get to witness massive green blanketed tea gardens which is a treat to the eyes.
