Demand for compensation to families of dead coal mine workers in Doomdooma

DOOMDOOMA: Johar Legal Associates (JLA), a voluntary organization, in a press conference held at Doomdooma Press Club on Tuesday, told the media that Kartik Gowala (24) of Ritu Kathalguri village and Vijay Munda, (25) of Makum engaged in illegal coal mining died on January 22 due to sudden emission of methane gas inside the coal mines. They were engaged in the illegal coal mining work by three contractors.

After conducting post-mortem examination, the bodies of the two deceased workers were handed over to their respective families the next day for cremation. However, they did not provide any compensation to the next of kin of the two victims.

The widows of the two deceased workers have three children each and are currently living a miserable life in adverse poverty. The JLA has demanded compensation of Rs 25 lakh each to the families of the two workers. Moreover, it demanded that the local police should register a case in connection with the death of the two workers and take legal action against the three illegal coal mining contractors responsible for their deaths.

The press conference was moderated by the president of the organization, Agnetas Ekka. Secretary Edoar Dimta, treasurer Nu Ekka and two relatives of the deceased workers were also present in the press meet.
